Seizure After Stroke Pathway
Frimley Park Hospital only

Seizure < 7 days of stroke = Acute Symptomatic Seizure

Acute seizure recurrence risk is low (10-20%) 10-year-risk of an unprovoked seizure after one poststroke acute symptomatic seizure is 30%.

AED treatment is not necessary but if desired use rapid titration medications (in starting antiepileptic medication protocol) and withdraw after 2 weeks

Seizure > 7 days of stroke = Unprovoked seizure

High seizure recurrence risk (70%) after one post-stroke unprovoked seizure therefore = diagnosis of epilepsy

AED treatment should be started as per anti-epileptic medication protocol and referred for outpatient follow up (NOT first fit clinic)
