Insulin Supply

Key Points

  • Insulin is a critical medication and should not be omitted unless clinically indicated.

  • During working hours, if a patients’ usual insulin is unavailable, this should be requested via the MAR and the ward pharmacist and/or dispensary informed.

  • Outside of working hours, this should be sourced from a different ward or the emergency drug cupboard. When this is not available, and is unable to be brought in from home, an alternative can be prescribed and administered on a temporary basis.

  • Only a prescribed insulin (including the correct form) should be administered.
